On morphological case and word-order freedom∗
نویسنده
چکیده
A commonly made cross-linguistic generalization is that languages with extensive case-marking tend also to have greater freedom of word order than languages without. Explicit statements to this effect can be found in Sapir (1921, pp. 66, 177ff.), Jakobson (1936, p. 28) and more recently in Blake (2001, p. 15), but the idea goes back to the beginning of comparative studies of language. Thus on the one hand, languages like Sanskrit, Finnish and Latin, which have extensive case distinctions, allow the order of nominal arguments in a sentence to be permuted without changing the basic meaning of the sentence (see 1). On the other hand, swapping the order of arguments in languages like English and French, whose case-marking is limited to relics in the pronominal system, is not possible without swapping their grammatical roles (see 2).

On Formalization of Word Order Properties
This paper contains an attempt to formalize the degree of word order freedom for natural languages. It exploits the mechanism of the analysis by reduction and defines a measure based on a number of shifts performed in the course of the analysis. This measure helps to understand the difference between the word order complexity (how difficult it is to parse sentences with more complex word order)...
متن کاملCase inversion in Georgian Syntactic Properties and Sentence Processing
The morphological and syntactic facts from Georgian create a unique puzzle for the study of sentence processing. The word order is characterized by considerable freedom and case marking is not uni-directionally associated with θroles. This article presents a grammatical account of Georgian case marking and a study on incremental sentences processing. The empirical findings show that case is ind...
متن کاملQuantifying Word Order Freedom in Dependency Corpora
Using recently available dependency corpora, we present novel measures of a key quantitative property of language, word order freedom: the extent to which word order in a sentence is free to vary while conveying the same meaning. We discuss two topics. First, we discuss linguistic and statistical issues associated with our measures and with the annotation styles of available corpora. We find th...
متن کاملStudying Formal Properties of a Free Word Order Language
The paper investigates a phenomenon of free word order through the analysis by reduction. It exploits its formal background and data types and studies the word order freedom by means of the minimal number of word order shifts (word order changes preserving syntactic correctness, individual word forms, their morphological characteristics and/or their surface dependency relations). The investigat...
متن کاملFormalization of Word-Order Shifts by Restarting Automata
The phenomenon of word order freedom plays an important role in syntactic analysis of many natural languages. This paper introduces a notion of a word order shift, an operation reflecting the degree of word order freedom of natural languages. The word order shift is an operation based upon word order changes preserving syntactic correctness, individual word forms, their morphological characteri...
